Welcome to the JuiceBox!

Teaching is our passion, and we are so excited to share this journey of education with you. It is going to be a year of fun, learning, and adventures. We can’t to see what the year has in store for us! We am excited to explore your strengths in a supportive, inclusive environment that celebrates diversity, encourages academic risk taking, and promotes the development of positive behavioral and social emotional skills.

This will be an exciting year for all of us. We can't wait to go on this unique adventure with you!

We job share, meaning that we share the job of one teacher, so that we can balance our lives as moms to young children. Mrs. Appelgren teaches Monday through Thursday, and Mrs. Ortiz teaches on Fridays.

Hi, I'm Mrs. Appelgren!

I live in Oakland with my husband, Chris, my son Oliver, my two step children, and my cat, Cleo. I love music, movies, art, and being outdoors. I also love crafting, shopping, and reading. I am a graduate of American High School, and am proud to be teaching in the community that raised me. I earned a B.A. in Drama at University of California, Irvine while teaching drama in public schools through the ArtsBridge program. I received my General Education and Special Education teaching credential at California State University, East Bay, and continued my education there, earning a Master’s Degree in Special Education. I previously taught a Special Day Class at Oliveira for five years, and this will be my eigth year as a fourth grade general education teacher.

Hi, I'm Mrs. Ortiz

I am a Bay Area native; I grew up in Newark and currently reside in Pleasanton with my husband, Derek, and daughter, Willow. Other than spending time with my Husband, daughter, family and friends, I love to cook and bake meals, and vacation at Disneyland!

I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Studies and Minor in Kindergarten - Eight Grade Mathematics from San Jose State University.  After graduating college I returned to SJSU to continue my education and earn my Teaching Credential

I have taught 4th - 8th grade in both public and private school. I have taught fourth grade at Oliveira for many years and I could not be happier! Fourth grade is such an amazing year.

Mrs. Appelgren LOVEs ❤️

My favorite store is Target! I love to grab an iced coffee and browse for new goodies for my home, family, and classroom.

I absolutely love Starbucks. My go-to order is an iced coffee, half sweetened, with almond milk.

I love to journal! At home, I spend a lot of time drawing and writing in my journal. That means I love stationary, stickers, washi tape, and pens. My favorite journaling pens are Tombrow Brush pens and Mildliners.

For teaching, my favorite pens are Papermate Inkjoy Gels and Flair Pens. I love all the colors!

I love snacks! Teaching is an exhausting job, and I get hungry! I even have a secret snack drawer in my classroom that sometimes needs restocking. My favorite snacks are kind bars, dried mango and mandarins from Trader Joe's, Babybell cheese, sparkling water, and chocolate covered coconut almonds from Trader Joe's. Yum!

I love shopping! My favorite stores are Target and The Disney Store. Willow and I love to walk through each aisle of a store and see what new and exciting things we can find.

Starbucks is a fun treat for me. Willow and I stop on occasion to get fraps and cake pops!

I love to craft and sew at home. I spend a lot of time crafting on my computer and creating different digital items for the classroom and for my home. I love to sew things for my friends and family, and especially for Willow!

I am a school supply collector and love Papermate InkJoy Ballpoint Pens. They are the perfect pen for checking student work and I love all of the bright colors they come in.

I try to eat healthy and love to snack. Some of my favorite snacks are low carb items like Atkins bars, salted nuts, and diet coke or diet orange soda. I also love dried fruit and cheese. Oh, and the occasional cookie, or three!
