COLLEGE & CAREER PLANNING PARENT NIGHT MAY 2025 LINK
Welcome to Horner and the middle school experience, where hormones run high and brain power is growing!
At Horner incoming students will have a School Counselor assigned to them based on grade level. Counselors begin working with the entire 6th Grade Level, and then follow them through the time that they promote from 8th Grade to high school. Therefore, each Counselor will move up with their class, and serve as the 6th, then 7th, then the 8th Grade Counselor. By following their entire grade level throughout their time at Horner Middle School, Counselors establish stronger connections with students and families, and the school community can benefit from the continuity of services. Our goal is that students will utilize their School Counselor as a valuable resource during their career in F.U.S.D.
What is the role of a school counselor and why do students come to see a school counselor?
School Counselors support students in their academic, social and emotional development. Students see counselors for a multitude of reasons. Here are just a few examples:
A student wants to apply to college, such as a UC Campus, and wants to know the admission requirements.
A student received his first D grade and is struggling in Math. He wants to know the next steps to support his performance and grade in the class.
A student just experienced a death in the family and is extremely emotional and can't seem to focus in class.
A student is taking honors classes and is experiencing stress from the academic demand.
A student has a conflict with her best friend and needs assistance in resolving the conflict.
When a student sees a School Counselor is his/her conversation confidential?
School Counselors provide students a safe, reliable space when they feel they need the additional support from their School Counselor. In alliance with the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) Ethical Standards, it is the School Counselor's responsibility to keep topics/issues discussed with students private and confidential, unless:
Students report that they are hurting themselves or want to hurt themselves.
Students report someone else is hurting them or has threatened to hurt them.
Students report that they are going to cause harm to another person.
Under these circumstances, School Counselors make the professional decision to contact the appropriate authorities, including notifying parents/guardians.
The Horner Counseling Department provides multiple presentations throughout the academic school year for all students at all grade levels. Our Counseling Program at Horner Middle School and all presentations align with ASCA.
