Departing El Calafate, you'll journey along Provincial Route 11 toward the Magallanes Peninsula. Upon arrival at the “Bajo de las Sombras” port, you'll board a boat to cross Lago Rico, a 20-minute navigation to the opposite shore facing the southern wall of the Perito Moreno Glacier.
Disembark to meet expert mountain guides who will lead you to a nearby shelter with restroom facilities. A brief 1 km hike along the lake’s edge follows, during which you'll learn fascinating details about glaciology and the history of Perito Moreno Glacier.
At the glacier’s edge, your guides will equip you with crampons and helmets. After a safety briefing, the real adventure begins—an unforgettable 90-minute trek on the glacier itself. This excursion explores the northern arm of Lago Argentino, surrounded by breathtaking landscapes and fed by various glaciers. The journey begins along Provincial Route 11, leading to Puerto Bandera after 45 km. There, you'll board a modern catamaran to navigate the North side of Lago Argentino.
Passing through the Boca del Diablo, the natural access to this side of the lake, the vessel approaches as close as possible to the Upsala Glacier, the largest in Los Glaciares National Park, depending on the presence of icebergs. The navigation continues along the Spegazzini Arm, where you'll witness the Heim Sur, Peineta, and Seco glaciers before arriving at the Spegazzini Glacier.
Disembark at the base allows for exploration of the area. A 300-meter accessible forest trail leads to the refuge, with stations and viewpoints offering stunning views of Glacier Bay. At the refuge, you can enjoy an optional lunch while marveling at the surroundings. For more adventurous visitors, a 1,200-meter mountain trail of medium difficulty winds through the forest, revealing natural viewpoints with extraordinary vistas.
The tour concludes with a return to the catamaran for the journey back to Puerto Bandera and transfer to El Calafate.
