Tea time at Celestina's house

At the small town of Tumbaya, 45 kms away from Jujuy capital city, this Kolla woman opens the door of her house, to share the values of her culture through her recipes.

Meet Celestina Abalos, she belongs to the Kolla Community, she has work for many years to help recover the Andean traditional cultivation, especially the quinoa, and now a specialist in this seed and she likes to incorporate it as characteristic ingredient in th meals she prepares.


As she loves to cook, her dream is to have a tea house in her peaceful town of Tumbaya, but as she has not accomplished that, she doesn't give up and invites to share tea in her house, so travellers can taste her special recipes.


Celestina opens the door of her very simple but cozy house, to teach the secrets of the Andean traditional cuisine. Some of her specialties are sweet dishes elaborated with Cuyi (corn flour), and regional dishes such as quinoa croquettes.


She feels proud to show her tradition to spread the knowledge of the Andean culture with the world and the love she has for her town. While she waits for the delicious preparations, she takes her guest for a walk around Tumbaya, to show the church, the square and talk about its rich history and community to which she belong, that has inhabits the hill for centuries. That’s why she is very knowledge about local herbs and the properties and uses.

As an indigenous, tied to her roots and committed to her culture, she says goodbye to her guests in a unique experience, inviting them to the patio of her house to perform the incense ceremony, an ancient tradition so they give thanks to the Pachamama for all that was offered and let them renew their energies.
