Teaching Core Samples...
The International Association of Sedimentologists (IAS) in collaboration with North Sea Core CIC provide sponsorship for the distribution of core samples for teaching from a range of depositional environments to academic institutions that do not necessarily have the funds to acquire these themselves. The IAS – North Sea Core CIC joint initiative, which is open to IAS Full Members, who apply on behalf of their institutions provides the core samples to successful applicants and the core samples will be the property of their home institution to be used exclusively for teaching.
Dr Taiwo Bolaji submitted an application on behalf of the Department of Geology, Federal University Oye-Ekiti in Q2, 2024. There were sixteen valid applications in total. Following evaluation by a sub-group of the IAS Council of Management (COM), and a vote of the full COM, nine were approved in this first round and we are excited to have made the list of beneficiaries announced on Wednesday August 28, 2024.
Our package arrived yesterday November 18, 2024 and was delivered by DHL at 15:12hrs. The core samples include is a combination pack including hand samples and resinated slabs, with supporting information. The set of hand samples allows students to appreciate the nature of core samples and to do a basic interpretation of lithology, colour, density, and depositional environment; while the set of resinated slabs allows students to perform a more in-depth interpretation of sedimentary features of a range of depositional environments. Our package includes samples from fluvial, estuarine, fractured carbonate, chalk and deepwater environments with ages spanning from Carboniferous, to Paleogene and Cretaceous.
We sincerely appreciate the IAS – North Sea Core CIC joint initiative for providing this to our University in support of our students in the Sedimentology (and Advanced Sedimentology), Sedimentary Petrology, Stratigraphy and Reservoir Geology courses.
