IB Courses at AHS

Over the course of both their 11th and 12th grade school years, students pursuing the Diploma Programme will complete six IB classes, one from each of the content areas, as well as the DP Core--Theory of Knowledge (TOK), Extended Essay (EE), and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS). DP Candidates must complete three IB courses at the Higher Level (HL) and three at the Standard Level (SL). Students complete Internal Assessments during their courses and External Assessments in May following the conclusion of their classes.

BECOMING an iB student

  1. Students interested in pursuing the Diploma Programme complete the IB Statement of Interest during the spring prior to their freshman year.

      • Freshman students will complete the pre-IB seminar during either the fall or spring Anchor Time.

  2. Students intending to pursue the Diploma Programme complete the IB Statement of Intent during fall of their sophomore year.

      • Students then meet with the IB Coordinator to select the IB Courses they intend to pursue prior to their sophomore meetings with their guidance counselors.

      • Teachers will make recommendations in spring after which students will verify the courses that they wish to take.

  3. Students and parents sign the Expectations for Diploma Programme and Course Candidates in spring of sophomore year.

  4. Students begin IB classes in fall of junior year.

NOTE: Students not zoned for Alpharetta High School must also complete the Fulton County Hardship Transfer process. More information about hardship transfer requirements can be found here and on the Fulton County Schools website.
