Course Description

Grade 4 mathematics is about:

Developing understanding and fluency with multi-digit multiplication, and developing understanding of dividing to find quotients involving multi-digit dividends.
Developing an understanding of fraction equivalence, addition and subtraction of fractions with like denominators, and multiplication of fractions by whole numbers.
Understanding that geometric figures can be analyzed and classified based on their properties, such as having parallel sides, perpendicular sides, particular angle measures, and symmetry.

Quarter 1

(Modules 1 )

Place Value Concepts for Addition and Subtraction
Place Value:

I can explain that in a multi-digit whole number, a digit in one place represents ten times what it represents in the place to its right. 4NBT.1
I can round multi-digit whole numbers to any place. 4NBT.3

Measurement & Data

I can compare relative sizes of measurement units: ft., in., km, m, cm.
I can convert and record measurement equivalents in a two-column table. 4MD.1

Quarter 2

(Module 2 & 3)

Place Value Concepts for Multiplication and Division

I can explain factor pairs for a whole number in the range 1-100.
I can define how multiples and factors are related. 4.OA.4

Multiplication and Division of Multi-Digit Numbers

Multiplication and Division:

I can multiply whole numbers with four digits by one-digit and also two-digit by two-digit using strategies based on place value and the properties of operations.

I can divide whole numbers with four digits by one-digit using strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division. 4NBT.6

Measurement & Data

I can apply the area and perimeter formulas for rectangles in real world and mathematical problems. 4MD.3

Quarter 3

(Module 4 )

Foundations for Fraction Operations

- I can draw points, lines, line segments, rays, angles, and perpendicular and parallel lines.
- I can identify these in two-dimensional figures. 4G.1

Measurement & Data

I can measure angles in whole-number degrees using a protractor. I can draw angles of specified measure. 4MD.6

Number Sense & Operations - Fractions

I can decompose a fraction into a sum of fractions with the same denominator in more than one way, recording each decomposition by an equation. 4NF.3b
I can multiply a whole number by a fraction. 4NF.4b

Quarter 4

(Module 5 & 6)

Angle Measurement and Plane Figures

I can add and subtract mixed numbers with like denominators. 4NF.3c
