How has the comic book (aka "graphic novel"), and the stories as well as characters that it produces, become such an essential part of storytelling in America? They have had a far-reaching impact on literature, film, art and culture-definition for generations, but why? This course traces the U.S history of the comic book genre from its emergence as newspaper strips in the late 19th century, through the age of superhero comics, and forward to modern comics and graphic novels. Throughout the semester, we will read, and watch, comic books and also write our own creative creations in the genre.

Understand how the format of a Graphic Novel impacts literature, analyze and compare Graphic Novels with other traditional forms of literature
