3rd Grade Science

course description

In the third grade performance expectations, students are expected to demonstrate grade-appropriate proficiency in asking questions and defining problems, developing and using models, planning and carrying out investigations, analyzing and interpreting data, constructing explanations and designing solutions, engaging in argument from evidence, and obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information. Students are expected to use these practices to demonstrate understanding of the core ideas. 

Quarter 1

Predicting Patterns in Motion

Students will determine how objects can exert forces on other objects, and predict an object’s future motion based on observations of patterns of motion.

Quarter 2

Similarities and Differences in Organisms

Students will analyze the variations of traits in organisms, patterns of life cycles, and give evidence of how the environment can influence advantages and disadvantages to life.

How Weather and Climate Affect our Lives

Students will interpret local and global weather data to identify annual temperature patterns that impact climates in different regions of the world.

Protecting Animals When Habitats Change

Students will analyze how well organisms survive in different habitats in order to construct a solution to a problem caused by environmental changes.
