Social Studies
course description
Children in 1st grade will compare different language, beliefs, customs and traditions. They will explain the role that significant individuals, historical events, and symbols have in contributing to American cultural identity.
Children will participate in group activities and contribute to the work of a group by behaving honestly, helping others, obeying rules and sharing resources.
Children will discuss the difference between rules and laws and explain how governments create rules and laws to create peace and establish order.
Please note that while every standard/topic in the grade level has not been included in this overview, all standards should be included in instruction.
Quarter 1
Sept - Oct
I can participate in group activities and contribute to the work of a group by behaving honestly, helping others, obeying rules and sharing resources (1.3ab).
I can discuss the difference between rules and laws and determine why school rules were developed and what the consequences are of not following the rules (1.4a).
I can explain how governments create rules and laws to create peace and establish order (1.4bc).
Quarter 2
Nov - Jan
I can determine how people make economic choices as producers and consumers of goods and services (1.10abcd).
I can compare different language, beliefs, customs and traditions and explain how they help shape the identity of a culture of a family and a community (1.1abc).
I can explain the role that significant individuals, historical events, and symbols have in contributing to American cultural identity (1.2ab).
Quarter 3
Feb - Apr
I can use maps, map tools and symbols to effectively locate important places in the community, state, and nation (1.5abc).
I can explain the role that significant individuals, historical events, and symbols have in contributing to American cultural identity (1.2ab).
Quarter 4
May - Jun
I can create a personal timeline of my life, school year, and family events to determine how families have a past and change over time (1.7abcd).
