ELA

Course Description

In 1st grade children will work on developing and answering questions about key ideas and details in a text. They will also be identifying main topics in a text, as well as important details (characters, setting, major events...).

Students will learn many sounds and different ways to spell those sounds. They will use this information to help decode (read) words and improve their reading fluency and comprehension.

Writing instruction will include using appropriate capitalization, punctuation and spacing. Students will also be expected to use the sound spellings they have learned.

Please note that while every standard/topic in the grade level has not been included in this overview, all standards should be included in instruction.

Sept - Oct

I can review spellings for single letter consonant sounds and short vowel sounds.
I can decode one syllable words.
I can read high frequency Tricky Words.
I can review spelling patterns for the digraphs sh, ch, th, ng, qu, and ck.
I can tell what a noun is.
I can read decodable stories in the Unit 1 Reader, Snap Shots and answer questions about key details in it.
I can write using proper capitalization, spacing and punctuation.

Unit 2

Nov - Dec

I can review spellings for long vowel sounds using the magic e, and ee.
I can decode one and two syllable words.
I can read high frequency Tricky Words.
I can read and write words using sound spellings I have learned.
I can tell what a noun is.
I can read decodable stories in the Unit 2 Reader, Gran and answer questions about key details in it.
I can write using proper capitalization, spacing and punctuation.
I can communicate ideas and information to write an opinion text.

Unit 3

December - January

I can review spellings for vowel teams oo, ou, oi, and aw.
I can decode one and two syllable words.
I can read high frequency Tricky Words.
I can read and write words using sound spellings I have learned.
I can tell what a verb is.
I can read decodable stories in the Unit 3 Reader, Fables and answer questions about key details in it.
I can write using proper capitalization, spacing and punctuation.
I can communicate ideas and information in writing.

Unit 4

January - March

I can review spellings for r-controlled vowels er, ar, and or.
I can decode one and two syllable words.
I can read high frequency Tricky Words.
I can read and write words using sound spellings I have learned.
I can use the past tense marker -ed.
I can tell what an adjective is.
I can read decodable stories in the Unit 4 Reader, Green Fern Zoo and answer questions about key details in it.
I can write using proper capitalization, spacing and punctuation.
I can communicate ideas and information to write facts on a topic.

Unit 5

March - May

I can review spellings for /ch/ (including -tch), /j/ (including g and -ge), and /v/ (including -ve).
I can decode one and two syllable words.

I can tell the difference between statements, questions, and exclamations.
I can identify root words and use the endings -ed and -ing.
I can tell what an adjective is.

Unit 6

May - June

I can tell what a pronoun is.
I can read decodable stories in the Unit 6 Reader, Grace and answer questions about key details in it.

Unit 7

June

I can review spellings for the long a sound (including ai and ay) and the long o sound (including oa).
I can decode one and two syllable words.
I can read high frequency Tricky Words.
I can read and write words using sound spellings I have learned.
I can use nouns and verbs in a sentence appropriately.
I can read decodable stories in the Unit 7 Reader, Kay and Martez and answer questions about key details in it.
I can write using proper capitalization, spacing and punctuation.
I can communicate ideas and information in writing.
