The New York State Seal of Biliteracy (NYSSB) recognizes high school graduates who have attained a high level of proficiency in English and one or more world languages. The intent of the NYSSB is to encourage the study of languages, to identify high school graduates with language and biliteracy skills for employers, to provide universities with additional information about applicants seeking admission and placement, to prepare students with twenty-first century skills, to recognize the value of language instruction, and to affirm the value of diversity in a multilingual society.
Successful candidates will earn three points in English and three points in each world language from a points matrix, which includes course grades, national and state exams, transcripts, and culminating projects. The NYSSB takes the form of a Seal on the student's diploma and a medallion worn at graduation.
At GRB, we offer an opportunity for students to earn the SEAL OF BILITERACY in their Senior year. It is NOT a requirement for students to be enrolled in a language class in order to earn the SEAL OF BILITERACY. Students can earn the SEAL in any language, including languages outside of Spanish and French. Students who are eligible are identified through the World Language teacher, ELL teacher and/or their counselor. Students who meet the criteria are identified as candidates in September/October and must complete the application process through Mrs. Halladay by October 1. Once the application is completed, student are assigned a MENTOR who will help them through the process of creating a research project to present to the SEAL OF BILITERACY panel in April/May. Students must complete projects in both English and the target language of choice.
For more information about earning the SEAL OF BILITERACY students can speak to their counselor or a World Language Teacher.
