This is a third year math class for students who have completed two units of math and are in the early college high school program or who desire to take a math class to help in the preparation for college. This is not a regents course and students will not be preparing for the Algebra II regents exam. The units of study include Polynomial, Quadratic, Rational expressions and equations, and Roots, Radical, and Complex numbers, and Trigonometry. (A graphing calculator is required).
Quarter 1
I. Basic Concepts
I can simplify math expressions using order of operations.
I can simplify math expressions with exponents.
II. Polynomials and Polynomial Function
I can add and subtract polynomials
I can multiply polynomials
I can perform long division of polynomials
I can perform synthetic division with polynomials
I can factor a monomial from a polynomial (factoring out a Greatest Common Factor - GCF)
I can factor difference of two squares (DOTS)
I can factor trinomials
I can factor completely using Greatest Common Factor, Difference of two Squares and Trinomial Factoring
I can factor by grouping
I can factor the sum and difference of two cubes
Quarter 2
II. Polynomials and Polynomial Function (con’t)
I can solve a polynomial equation by factoring (both factorable quadratic and cubic)
III. Quadratic Functions:
I can solve a quadratic equation by completing the square
I can solve a quadratic equation by quadratic formula
I can approach and solve application word problems with quadratic equations
I can graph a quadratic function by hand and with the calculator
IV. Rational Expressions and Equations
I can state the domain of a rational function
