This course provides students with basic knowledge and practical experience in child development. Students will learn about growth and development during the first decade of life. Topics will include brain development, pregnancy, social/emotional, intellectual, and physical needs. Students will gain knowledge of the importance of a nurturing caregiver on a child’s healthy development. Parenting tips and strategies will be discussed throughout the course.
In Human Development 1, we follow life starting in the womb, and trace it through childhood and adolescence. Maternal health and safety is discussed as well as parenting styles and beliefs. Students will learn about the importance of a healthy and nurturing environment. We examine physical, intellectual, emotional, and social development throughout the years.
Quarter 1
Students will describe varying factors that contribute to healthy brain development.
Students will be able to list a variety of issues that could have a negative effect on the brain.
Students will be able to analyze strategies that promote prenatal growth and development.
Students will be able to describe prenatal benchmarks of each trimester.
Quarter 2
Students will be able to identify physical, social, emotional, and intellectual needs of infants, toddlers, preschool, and school age children.
Students will be to describe how a nurturing environment leads to optimal growth and development of children.
Students will be able to analyze the role that nutrition, healthcare, immunizations, and exercise play in the overall health and safety of children.
Students will identify behaviors that are portrayed as a healthy parent and the role it plays in the development of a healthy child.
