Studio 1

Course Description

Studio 1 is a half year course in the foundations of art. Every successful artist must first learn how to see like one. You will learn how to see edges, negative spaces, angels, proportions, value, color, and textures of three-dimensional objects. This course will give you the skills necessary to interpret your perceptions on a two-dimensional surface using various media. We will learn how artists in the past and present interpreted these same challenges.

quarter 1

Unit 1 (Line Design)

I can identify and reproduce the different line types, qualities, and characteristics in the desired medium.(VA:Re8.1HS11/Va:Cr2.1.HS111)
I can identify and recreate a symbol that represents myself in a similar fashion to the studied artist. (VA:Re9.1HS11)
I can apply my knowledge of the Art Element Line, its terminology, the art medium in the planning, creation, and written self assessment.(VA:Cr1.1HS1)
I can create a Line Design Project using the illustrated marker technique with a design that relates to the referenced artist. (Haring) (VA:Cr1.1HS1)

Unit 2 (Shape Design)

I can identify and reproduce the different types of shapes, qualities, and characteristics of color blends and values in the desired medium.(VA:Re8.1HS11/Va:Cr2.1.HS111)
I can identify and recreate a visual image that represents myself in a similar fashion to the studied artist. (Kandinsky) (VA:Re9.1HS11)
I can apply my knowledge of the Art Element shape and color, its terminology, the art medium in the planning, creation, and written self assessment.(VA:Cr1.1HS1)
I can create a Shape Design Project using the blending gradient technique with a design that relates to the referenced artist.(VA:Cr1.1HS1)

Unit 3 (Animal Texture)

I can identify and reproduce the five different drawing types, the qualities, and characteristics of texture and value in the desired medium.(VA:Re8.1HS11/Va:Cr2.1.HS111)
I can identify and recreate a visual image that represents an animal of my desired choosing in a similar fashion to the studied artist (Durer). (VA:Re9.1HS11)
I can apply my knowledge of the Art Element shape, line, texture, form, and value, its terminology, the art medium in the planning, creation, and written self assessment.(VA:Cr1.1HS1)
I can create an Animal Texture Design Project using the line drawing techniques on a scratch board medium in a design that relates to the referenced artist.(VA:Cr1.1HS1)

quarter 2

Unit 5 (Mixed Media)

I can identify and reproduce a image, of my choosing, in a mixed media fashion using three mediums I excelled at during the duration of the course.(VA:Re8.1HS11/Va:Cr2.1.HS111)
I can identify and recreate a visual image that represents my mastery of the medium and techniques associated with the studied artists. (VA:Re9.1HS11)
I can apply my knowledge of the Art Elements shape, line, texture, form,space, and value, its terminology, the art mediums in the planning, creation, and written self assessment.(VA:Cr1.1HS1)
I can create a Mixed Media Design Project using multiple techniques in multiple mediums that relates to the referenced artists.(VA:Cr1.1HS1)
