All five levels of Chinese classes are open for enrollment. Please select the level that best matches your actual proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. (Refer to the main page for each course’s proficiency level definitions and requirements.)
Your years of learning Chinese do not equal your Chinese proficiency level. Therefore, if you have prior experience learning Chinese, you should sign up and take the Chinese Diagnostic Test to get advice about the most suitable course for you to take (Information as below). FUHSD gives course selection suggestions only based on your diagnostic test results.
We STRONGLY encourage selecting a level based on the diagnostic test results. Our data and student surveys show that students who enrolled in levels beyond their preparation often faced challenges in achieving ideal grades. Many also reported experiencing high-stress levels and dedicating excessive time to studying Chinese, making it difficult to maintain a healthy balance across their school subjects.
The diagnostic test will be held at 3:00 p.m. in Lynbrook High School's library on February 25th and 27th, 2026.
If you select Chinese 2 or higher on your Course Selection Form, you will receive an invitation email with instructions on how to register for the test.
What is the testing format?
Students will be tested in listening, reading, and writing with a pencil, not typing.
The test will last about 2 hours.
What do I need to prepare?
Nothing! We do not recommend that students prepare for the diagnostic test because the test is aimed at finding the proper placement for students. Therefore, if a student overprepares themselves and luckily advances to a higher level, they might not perform well enough in class due to weaker foundations. However, students certainly are welcome to review what they have already learned in any other Chinese programs before the diagnostic test, instead of cramming a huge amount of new materials in a short time, which will be forgotten very quickly.
