Me at the Rome Colosseum 2009
Welcome to Potter Junior High School and my 7th Grade Math class. Here's a little information about myself.
I was born in Northern CA, but moved to the Midwest when I was 2 years old. I grew up in Southwest Missouri until completion of high school. From there I enlisted in to the United States Marine Corps where I would spend the next 21 years of my life. I have been fortunate to be able to travel all over the world.
I received my Bachelor's Degree in Business Management at National University, and received my Teaching Credential from California State University, San Marcos.
As an educator my goal is to:
Show you math can be fun and that our struggles are learning opportunities. I want you as students to love exploring ways to solve and apply math to our daily lives.
I became a math teacher because I have always enjoyed the challenge of problem solving. As in society, as well as in life, problem solving is an everyday occurrence and the methods to problem solving from Mathematics can prepare someone for life’s little problems. In order to be a successful math teacher, I will create a classroom environment that is engaging, collaborative, and focused on meeting the individual needs of the students. My teaching philosophy will be a blend of teacher centered and student centered learning. Progressivism is a student-centered philosophy that I believe can prepare students to solve and handle life's little problems. Progressivism organizes schools around the concerns, curiosity, and real-world experiences (Sadker, Zittleman, 2016). In order for this philosophy to be successful, I will be the facilitator and engage students with meaningful questions and help them devise strategies to solve those questions. As a progressive teacher I will know my students and how they learn; then finds ways or methods to meet the individual needs of those students. I am a progressive teacher with a blend of teacher-centered philosophies. Occasionally, there will be time when structure and organization will be needed in order to facilitate learning. As a math teacher, I want my students to be able to apply the processes of solving mathematical problems in solving real life issues and problems.

This is a link to a parent informational document with information for the main math focus for each grade level. Just scroll down to the grade level you're interested in knowing more about. Each grade level document is able to fit on one, double-sided page. (High School courses need two pages, double-sided.)
