Class overview

Welcome to OUR 3rd Grade classroom! The goal is to promote a student centered environment where kids feel comfortable sharing ideas with others and learning valuable lessons from mistakes.  Music and art are used to promote a calm atmosphere and outlet for creativity on a daily basis.

The jump from 2nd to 3rd grade is a big one.  Students will gain more independence than ever before.  Mr. D. tries to instill healthy and helpful habits that will serve as a framework for keeping kids organized and mindful this year and beyond.

Kids come into the 3rd grade as readers.  This year, students will use their reading skills to explore and analyze the text more deeply.  We use the Daily 5 as a framework for students to practice their reading and to gain a passion for diving into texts they want to explore.  We also use the Journey's Reading text as a common ground to teach fundamental reading analytical skills.

In math, through Number Talks, we will dive deep into number sense concepts and use this as an opportunity for students to share ideas and explain their thinking.   This allows students to see how their classmates choose to solve a particular problem, adding more tools to each student's tool box.  While the concepts of multiplication and division are a large focus, we also explore fractions, addition/subtraction with regrouping, variables, geometry, and applying these skills to the real world.
