AVID FAQ's

Who is an AVID Student?

Freshmen AVID students at RHS are students who want to learn, who want to succeed, and want to attend a four year college or university. These students typically have A's B's and C's throughout middle school and know they could do even better in school with some assistance. Freshmen AVID can take some getting used to for students as it's implementing all the core expectations and procedures needed to succeed in AVID and school in the years to come.

What to expect with AVID?

AVID students are expected to work on a variety of skills throughout their freshmen year, whether its an organized binder, learning to utilize calendars and agendas, or simply learning how to properly approach teachers and classmates when help is needed. Along with that basic knowledge they are expected to develop WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading) skills in a variety of ways. From timed writings to read and reacts to team builders AVID students are continuously learning about how to be better students and their selves.

Can I join AVID after freshmen year?

AVID is available for all four years at RHS, but the longer a student waits to join the more difficult it is for students to assimilate into the class. AVID students generally start together from freshmen year and stay together all the way to graduation, because so many students push themselves in classes they often take multiple classes together thus building an even stronger bond with each other. Students who join their Junior or Senior year tend to feel out of place with the rest of the class as the bonds have been created among the students who have been in AVID since day one.
