This painting is the final product of our collaboration with local artist Jasyn Lucas. It is currently hanging in the lobby of the Area 1 Office in Thompson, MB. The painting is 6 feet by 4 feet in size. It encapsulates our area, schools, terrain, and students and staff talent beautifully.
This project involved 18 zoom sessions with our 10 schools that tested our technology and resources to the limit. During these sessions with the students, Jasyn, a proud member of the Mathis Colomb First Nation, discussed his heritage, telling the students that he was born and raised in Thompson and adopted into the Lucas family. He discussed his resilience by sharing his experience owning a local tattoo shop and art gallery, which did not survive the pandemic. Building on his passion for art and education, he described his decision to return to school to become a better leader and presenter.
Jasyn's sessions with our students in Area 1 were wholly engaging and uplifting. He showed pieces of his art and described some of his techniques. Students from all 10 of our schools were encouraged to send in art submissions using any media they chose that showcased their school and community pride. Jasyn used these submissions as inspiration for the final piece you see to the left.
On the following pages of this site, you will see all of the submissions from our students and staff. If you look closely, you might spot some of the submissions that Jasyn actually used in his painting. We are thrilled with this project and grateful for the connection we have made with Jasyn.
We look forward to working with him more in the future.
