Welcome high school students! I am so excited to be here and assigned to assist you with your reading skills! This is going to be the best year of Intensive Reading Class you have experienced in your school career. Probably the most essential concept we need to address is: Why are you sitting in this classroom?
Some students are assigned to Intensive Reading because their previous reading skills were below grade average (based on criterion referenced tests). Why do you suppose a student would have below grade level reading skills? Or why do you suppose a student would struggle with reading? Statistics and research have proven that students who struggle with grade level reading materials either missed a basic foundation of phonics at an early age, or had difficulty comprehending what they had read.
Regardless of your past experience with reading classes, we are going to start fresh today! We are going to create a goal and achieve that goal. You may personalize our goal to meet your needs. But, basically we are going to believe that where ever you were last year, we are going to make gains, show progress, and move forward this year. We are going to embrace reading together. We are going to learn to be better readers. Together we are going to accomplish amazing things!
