So far, the writing that we have analyzed has taken the form of prose (writing that follows nature rhythms of speech). For our new Unit, we will shift to focusing on poetry.
Merriam-Webster defines poetry as "metrical writing" which is an excellent definition. To put things in even simpler terms, poetry is any writing that pays careful attention to sound.
Today's lesson will focus on defining and analyzing those elements that allow writing to move from prose to poetry.
Meter
Rhythm
Rhyme
Alliteration
Assonance
All poems must have some special attention to the sound of the words. A failure to do so will result in prose, and a failure to do so well will result in bad poetry.
When analyzing a the sound elements of a poem, you should start by considering the rhythm, as well as an sort of repeating sounds.
