For our first module, we will examine how different authors view events as seen in examples of news writing (writing about current events). If we take the time to analyze a variety of articles written about the same event or topic, we will quickly find numerous different viewpoints and perspectives. In some cases, an author's views may create clear bias in the articles, thus detracting from it's quality.

It is incredibly important to consider exactly where you find sources when working online. Watch the video above and consider how the source of an article may lead to, or uncover, possible bias.
Always be sure to consider the quality of your sources. Always ask yourself, is there bias in this source?
You should also be sure to consider the many ways articles may create confusion. This article gives excellent advice for vetting sources, including a break-down of 10 types of "Fake News". I have included a copy of this chart at the bottom of the page as well.

When conducting research, databases, collection of articles procured by an editing team, are the best place to start. Databases almost always contain reliable sources that have been peer reviewed (checked by other experts).
The above video will provide helpful tips for conducting your research using databases. Watch it carefully, and when you are ready to begin, move onto the activity below.
For your first research assignment, you will be required to seek out three articles, all of which are focused on the same topic. For example, you might choose to look at three different reviews of the same book, or three different analyses of some resent event. As always, the articles you choose should focus on a topic that is appropriate for school.
Take a few moments to brainstorm possible topics for your research focus. Your topic should connect in some way to the UN Global Goals. I have provided links to these goals on our website (please see the links at the top of this page).
When you are ready, please begin the formal activity by clicking on the link below.
