Multisensory Reading
What Is Multisensory Reading?
Multisensory reading is an approach to learning that uses more than one sense at a time. Children may use what they see, hear, say, and do while learning letters, sounds, words, and reading skills.
For example, a student might:
π See a letter or word
π Hear the sound it makes
π£οΈ Say the sound aloud
β Touch or move letters while building a word
βοΈ Write the letter or word
Using multiple senses can help children make stronger connections and better remember what they are learning.
What Does Multisensory Learning Look Like?
During reading instruction, students may:
Trace letters while saying their sounds
Build and change words using letter tiles
Tap or touch sounds in words
Use hand motions or gestures to support learning
Write letters and words while saying the sounds
Clap or tap syllables
Practice reading and spelling words using hands-on materials
Multisensory instruction makes learning active, engaging, and meaningful. It gives students multiple ways to practice and helps support the connection between sounds, letters, reading, and spelling.
Every child learns differently, and using a variety of strategies can help students become more confident and successful readers!
