Introduction to Photography - CARLSON
Description of Class
The following will be covered: Principles of digital and darkroom Photography, composition, the manual SLR camera, black and white film, darkroom procedures, enlarging, and historical background. This course treats photography as an art form and as a form of creative expression. Photography as a science relies on technology, as an art form it expresses a personal vision.
Notes/Assignments
Assignments are based on two categories, Photographic Prints and Notes/Studies. The majority of our grades come from photographic prints/test strips/contact sheets. The outlines are summaries from our text book, The Photographic Eye (see link for pdf). There are some in class studies that assist in student understanding of photographic concepts.
Expectations
Attendance is a Priority! Unless you have a working darkroom at home, you will need to be present to complete assignments. Each student will need to provide a 3 ring binder. When students sign out a camera it must be returned by the specified date. We have a limited number of cameras and many students using them. Each camera will be expected upon signing out. If a camera is broken, lost, stolen - it must be replaced financially by the student responsible.
Supply List
Students will be given 30 sheets of 4x5 paper, a roll of 35mm film (24 exposures), a negative sleeve, a blackout bag, and plastic sleeves for photo storage.
