This course is a basic introduction to photography. The student will learn about camera operations, lenses, meters, lighting, black-and-white film development, and print making using darkroom techniques. Group discussions and critiques concerning the history of photography, and contemporary and conceptual practices will also be a focus of this course. Lab fee. Single lens manual 35mm camera required.
Course Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
understand the function of the essential parts of a 35mm camera;
demonstrate the working process involving the camera, film, and darkroom by applying the proper sequence and procedure for developing and printing photographic images;
solve various photographic problems by utilizing the camera, film, and darkroom;
understand fundamental concepts of visual problem-solving, image design, and composition;
think and communicate fluently in regard to technical and conceptual aspects of photographic practice; and
explore photography as a form of visual expression.

1. INTRODUCTION/OVERVIEW/PHILOSOPHY
In Photography, students learn the process of making a black and white print from start to finish. Students use manual 35mm cameras, load and develop their own film, expose and develop their own prints in the darkroom, as well as mat, display and critique final prints. Elements of design and principles of composition will also be applied during this course. The course concludes with a brief introduction to digital photography.
The teacher will provide all required cameras, materials and equipment. However, the use of personal equipment is strongly recommended.
Students will have a hands-on experience throughout the entire one semester class.
This is a one semester elective course for any grade level 11-12 without any prerequisites. Student Outcomes:

2. 35mmSLRCameras
Thestudentswillidentifythepartsofthecameraandexplain their function.
Thestudentswillbeabletotaketechnicallyaccuratephotos controlling exposure, focus and contrast.
The students will use the camera to explore their visual environment and to record their explorations.
Studentswillphotographspecificassignmentsasprescribedby the instructor.
3. FilmandProcessing
Studentswillidentifydifferentfilmtypesandtheirspecific properties.
Studentswillloadtheirownfilmintofilmcassettesusingabulk film loader.
Students will use the camera’s light meter to make accurate exposure readings.
Studentswillproperlyremovetheexposedfilmfromthecamera and load it into a film developing tank.
Studentswillprocesstheirownfilmaccordingtothetechnique presented in class.
Students will identify cause and effects of problems associated with their negatives through formal critiques.
4. DarkroomandPhotographicPrintMaking
Thestudentswillproperlyuseanenlarger,timer,safelight,easel, and negative carrier.
Thestudentswillfollowtheguidelinesforappropriateandsafe behavior in the darkroom.
The students will expose and develop using the print process: contact sheet, test strips, straight print, working prints, final print.
Thestudentswillutilizetheadvancedprintingtechniquesof burning-in and dodging, in addition to using polycontrast filters when necessary, and cropping.
5. DisplayingFinalPrints
Thestudentswillbeabletooperatethefollowingmatcutting equipment: ruler, paper cutter, mat cutter.
Thestudentswillaccuratelymatandprepareafinalprintfor display.
The students will critique the final print, addressing the strengths and weaknesses of technical and aesthetic criteria.

6. DigitalPhotoEnhancements
Studentswillbeabletoimportimagesfromtheirdigitalcamera into the computer using iPhoto, Photoshop and the negative scanner.
Studentswillbecomefamiliarwithusingthecomputertoenlarge, crop, and print their photos.
Students will use Adobe Photoshop to complete basic image adjustments, including exposure, contrast and focus controls.
Studentswillcritiquetheirphotosandcomparethemtosimilar 35 mm photos.
3. PROFICIENCY LEVELS
This elective course is for students in grades 9-12. There are no prerequisites.

5. GROUPING
This elective course is for students in grades 9-12. There are no prerequisites.
6. ARTICULATION/SCOPE AND SEQUENCE/TIME FRAME
This one semester (2.5) credit course is available to all high school students, and can be offered in both the fall and spring semesters.

Materials & Equipment: All necessary supplies are provided for students including cameras, film, photo paper and processing chemicals. The photo lab has full darkroom and computers. The use of personal equipment is also strongly recommended.
8. METHODOLOGIES
The teacher will explain the equipment and cameras being used and the scope of each project. Students will complete individual as well as some group work with the assistance and advice of the teacher.
