Academic Pentathlon 2024-2025 Theme - Our Changing Climate
2024-2025 Pentathlon Novel Study - Melt by Ele Fountain
Overview : The United States Academic Pentathlon’s curriculum is an interdisciplinary curriculum in which a selected theme is integrated across five different subject areas: fine arts, literature, mathematics, science, and social science. The theme for the 2024-2025 U.S. Academic Pentathlon curriculum is Our Changing Climate. While in most subjects the majority of the topics relate to the overall curricular theme, some topics that cover fundamentals may also be included to encourage a thorough understanding of the subject area as a whole. The U.S. Academic Pentathlon mathematics curriculum is unrelated to the theme and focuses on standard middle school mathematics topics.
The Pentathlon program is designed for seventh- and eighth-grade students. Tests are written to assist students in their mastery of the TEKS. Teams are ranked statewide, and competitors can win team and individual medals for their efforts on a regional level.
The Pentathlon competition is comprised of five events: math, social studies, science, literature, fine arts, and Super Quiz. The Super Quiz event is an oral relay before a large audience in which students work collaboratively on grade-level to answer ten multiple-choice questions. Each year a new overlying theme or topic is selected for study in conjunction with the essential readiness skills to help prepare for the STAAR tests.
This program is designed to serve as a learning experience and feeder program for the Decathlon competition in high school. Decathlon is offered as its own class at Independence High School.
