Ms. Kim Cooley has been teaching for over 20 years, and is the Director of Bands at Creek Valley Middle School. Her responsibilities include: directing Honor Winds, assisting the Symphonic and Jazz Bands, and teaching beginning flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, and saxophone classes. Under the direction of Mrs. Cooley, the Honor Winds has been awarded Superior ratings at UIL, Peak Festivals, and the Dallas Winds Festival. The Honor Winds was also awarded Best In Class and Most Outstanding Middle School Band at Peak Festivals and was named a National Winner in the Mark of Excellence Contests. Recently, the Creek Valley Honor Winds were selected to perform at the 70th Annual Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago in December 2016. Prior to her appointment, she was a graduate assistant and conductor of the University Wind Ensemble at West Texas A&M, under Dr. Gary Garner, where she earned her bachelor's and master's degree. Her professional affiliations include the Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, and Texas Music Adjudicators Association.
Mr. Jarred Dodd is Head Band Director at Rushing Middle School, in Prosper Texas. His responsibilities at Rushing MS include: directing the Symphonic Winds, assisting with Concert Bands I, II and III and teaching beginner oboe, bassoon, trumpet, and horn classes. Mr. Dodd has served as head director of Rushing Middle School since opening the school in 2020. Ensembles under his direction have consistently earned superior ratings in Texas UIL competition and local festivals and have helped to develop a number of TMEA All-State musicians. Most recently, the Rushing MS Symphonic Winds earned recognition as a state semi-finalist in TMEA Honor Band competition and as a National Winner in the Mark of Excellence by the Foundation for Music Education.
Mr. Ross Patterson is in his 15th year of teaching and his fourth year at Shadow Ridge Middle School in Lewisville ISD. He is the lead teacher for the Shadow Ridge Honor Winds and all beginning brass classes. He previously taught at Burnett Junior High in Wylie, Texas as the Director of Bands for 7 years, as well as Robinson Middle School in Plano, Texas as the Associate Band Director. His ensembles have received consistent Sweepstakes ratings at UIL Concert & Sightreading Contest. Mr. Patterson is an active clinician and adjudicator in Texas and has presented at various band director workshops.
A native of Weatherford, Texas, Mr. Patterson graduated with bachelor’s degrees in music education and music theory from the University of North Texas in 2007 and a master’s degree in music education from Southern Methodist University in 2013. He is a trombonist with the Lone Star Wind Orchestra, directed by Eugene Corporon, and continued his teaching career during graduate study as a private low brass instructor in the Lewisville, Plano, and Richardson Independent School Districts. His professional affiliations include the Texas Music Educators Association and the Texas Bandmasters Association.
Mrs. Misty Smith is currently in her 15th year of teaching at Cooper Junior High in Wylie. Under Mrs. Smith’s direction, the Cooper Junior High Symphonic Band has earned all superior ratings at UIL Concert and Sightreading Contest and has received Best in Class designations at other area festivals. Cooper Symphonic Band has also been named a Citation Winner six times and a Commended Winner in the Citation of Excellence Competition three times. Prior to her joining Wylie ISD, Mrs. Smith taught at Austin Academy in Garland ISD, Vanston MS in Mesquite ISD and served as a private clarinet instructor for students in Allen and Frisco.
Mrs. Smith began her teaching career in 1996 after earning her bachelor’s degree in music education from East Texas A&M University. Her professional affiliations include Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, Texas Music Adjudicators Association, and Phi Beta Mu. She resides in Allen with her husband Brad, who is also a middle school band director, and their two adult children Kaylee and Jake.
