Principal's Fall STEAM Challenge

Kindergarten-5th grade STEAM Challenge

Think of a celebration or holiday that occurs in the Fall. How could you use STEAM skills to explore, explain, and design a float connected to this celebration? 

Read a book about the celebration you chose. You may choose to check out this book from the McSpedden library, the local public library or purchase one for your own keeping. 

After your child is finished reading the book, discuss the following questions: 

• What connection did you have to this story?

• What did you learn from the book that you didn't know before reading?

• What is one question you still have after reading the book?

• What did you learn about this culture that you think others should know?

• If this isn't a holiday you celebrate, how did exploring someone else's celebration help you better understand your own experiences and the experiences of others?

This is meant to be a way for students to use their creativity and critical thinking skills. There is no right or wrong answer. The process might be messy and that is okay! Remember to have fun!

The Challenge: After reading a book of your choice about a holiday or celebration that occurs in the Fall, think about what you learned  Then design and create a festival parade float out of the materials below. Bring your creation to share in our school library for everyone in school to see! Please have turned in no later than Friday, December 4th! 

Requirements: 

• Empty Kleenex box or shoe box

• Must Roll or slide along a “parade route”

• Carry at least one standing decoration

• Include a movable element

• Show creativity, add details and designs to the float, so that it represents the celebration or holiday you learned about.

• An explanation on what you learned about the holiday or celebration.
