Grades will be updated regularly, usually within 10 days of the assignment deadline, in the electronic grade book. Please consider major projects/research papers may take longer to grade. Online grade book may not reflect final grades for the semester.
9 Weeks Grading Weights/Minimums
Beginning with 2019-20 School Year
Weights:
Major Assessment Grades - 60%
Minor Assessment Grades - 40%
Defining the Categories:
- Major: Major grades are classroom summative assessments, including major projects & essays, tests, and other assessments intended to synthesize knowledge of several skills and concepts. Summative grades always represent students’ knowledge following opportunities to practice and receive feedback and intervention.
- Major grades are re-assessable (see retest guidelines).
- Minor: Minor grades are typically formative, assessments utilized to guide teachers’ classroom instruction and intervention and guide students’ knowledge of their strengths and weaknesses. Often these assessments cover smaller sets of skills or concepts, or even a single skill or concept. Daily work may be included in this category, as may quizzes or smaller/short-term projects.
- Because these assessments represent formative learning, teachers should utilize methods to allow the grade to reflect the student’s most recent level of mastery. Teachers may determine that increased student learning justifies a change in a minor grade, based on evidence at the teacher’s discretion.
Minimums:
- The minimums represent the fewest grades that may be taken within the allotted time frame. More grades may be given at the team’s or teacher’s discretion.
- No one assignment/assessment can count more than 30% of a marking period grade.
- An assessment for which more than one grade is taken counts as only one assignment/assessment.
GRADING DURING EXCUSED ABSENCES
The student will be given an opportunity to make up all work, complete tests, and/or other graded assignments that he/she missed during the excused absence. Make-up work includes work made up due to absences, and work made up due to extenuating circumstances as determined by the teacher.
- Students will be allowed a minimum of one day to make up work for each day of excused absence.
- Teacher discretion may be used in assigning additional days. Students will receive full credit for their daily work.
- Students will be allowed a minimum of one day to make up work for each day of suspension.
- It is the student’s responsibility to obtain and complete make up work. Under extenuating circumstances such as long-term illness or family emergencies, teachers may choose to give students more than one day for each day missed to make up assignments.
- If a student misses a test or quiz, it is the responsibility of the student to schedule a time with the teacher to make up the assessment.
- If the student was aware of an assignment deadline before the absence occurred, the assignment or exam may be due upon the student’s return. Once again, under extenuating circumstances, teachers may choose to extend due dates for students.
GRADING DURING UNEXCUSED ABSENCES
When an absence is unexcused, students are expected to make up all missed work to the extent required to show mastery of the missed material. The student will receive no credit for any work due or completed in class during such absences. (This includes major exams, tests, labs, and class activities.)
MAJOR GRADES AND DAILY ASSIGNMENTS
All assignments that are included in the major grade category turned in late will have 10% deducted every day up to 3 days (30% maximum). Students may be assigned to teacher tutorials or The Husky Den in order to get work completed.
MINOR GRADES
All daily and activity assignments that are turned in by the due date may earn up to 100%. All assignments that are turned in late will have 10% deducted everyday up to 3 days (30% maximum). Students may be assigned to teacher tutorials or The Husky Den in order to get work completed.
