Due to TX House Bill 1481, personal devices are NOT permitted for use during this competition. Only school issued Chromebooks.
Using laptops or Macbooks is NOT allowed. Desktop computers with Adobe Creative Cloud software will be provided in editing spaces.
Schools will enter a max of two students for this category. Total running time may not exceed 20 seconds (time limit is met + or - three seconds) Students must be competing in another on-site category to participate.
Students will produce a stand-up that would typically be place in an edited news package. Contestants will receive a total of three prompts/stories and choose one to write their stand-up on. Stand-ups serve as a on-camera bridge or demonstration that would be edited within a news package.
Evaluation Standards:
Students wrote the key aspect of the story with accurate facts.
The delivery of the key aspect was informational yet concise.
The student used non-verbal expressions and demonstrations properly.
The stand-up environment was relevant to the key aspect in the story.
Schools will enter one team of up to two students.
Students will use the given prompt to create a comprehensive online multimedia package that explores the provided topic. The students must write an article with a clear angle and use their school’s SNO site to present the information. The story can include text, photos, videos and/or audio (It should be no longer than 1 minute) and at least one additional layer of coverage that includes a sidebar, links to related resources, interactive reader features, etc. Students can use social media for the post as well. Video and audio used in the story should enhance the story content. Material should be clearly accessible and easy to navigate on their school’s SNO site.
Evaluation Standards:
Story Structure: Story is properly structured and formatted. It provides a comprehensive look at the topic/issue.
Grammar: Story contains proper grammar, spelling and capitalization.
Comprehensiveness: Story provides comprehensive look at the topic/issue.
Elements: Elements used to create engagement beyond the text of the story such as photos, videos, audio, hyperlinks, infographics, social media, etc. are used appropriately and enhance the story..
Accessibility: Material should be clearly accessible and easy to navigate. Stories should be published to campus SNO sites.
Ethical Standards: All items in the story should adhere to ethical standards and journalistic style (headlines, captions, copy).
Schools will either enter two individuals or a team of two students. Total running time may not exceed 1 minute and 30 seconds (time limit is met + or - three seconds).
Students will use the provided prompt to create a broadcast news package relating to the provided topic. A package should contain a reporter’s voice-over, videotaped b-roll shots and soundbites. The story must have been shot the day of the competition during the allotted time given. A reporter intro and outro is required, but the student can choose to be on camera or not.
The judges will look for a news story that shows a clear reliance on the news values of timeliness, proximity, conflict, impact and prominence.
Evaluation Standards:
Use the provided list of programs/classes for interview and b-roll sources.
Conduct pre-production planning.
Contain shot variety.
Shots are properly exposed.
Audio quality is well-balanced.
As you approach people for an interview, be considerate and professional. Explain your purpose and topic. Do not disrupt other classes during the news gathering process.
Video connects and enhances the story you want to tell.
Get all necessary details for the lower-third titles.

The story must have been shot the day of the competition during the allotted time given. A reporter intro and outro is required, but the student can choose to be on camera or not.

Schools will enter a single student from their campus. Total running time may not exceed 1 minute (time limit is met + or - three seconds).
Students will capture footage through the competition day and put together a competition promo that does not exceed a total run time of one-minute. Music beds and graphics must follow all copyright laws and policies.
Evaluation Standards:
Content must be shot horizontally.
Appropriate music source is used (i.e. Megatrax)
Necessary and interesting information is included
Effective use of graphics
Well-lit, clear visuals, smooth camera work, variety of shot composition techniques.
Balanced audio levels, no distracting background noise, effective use of music, voiceovers, and/or sound effects
Strong engagement and visual style
