Problem Solving:

Suggestions when working with your child…

Before solving, ask your child to retell the problem to you in their own words.
Allow your child to use some type of manipulative (Legos, pennies, mini marshmallows, etc.).
Once your child has solved the problem correctly, ask your child to explain his/her thinking to you (how did he/she solve the problem and what strategy was used).
If your child solves the problem quickly...
- ask him/her to show you using another strategy.
- ask him/her to create a similar problem using different numbers.
- ask him/her when they might use this problem in the real world.
