Comedy is a reflection of the struggles people face in everyday life. Whether it is something small, like falling, or something larger, like sickness or oppression, humor is used as an outlet for the painful emotions to be turned into something positive - laughter. 

With the evolution of technology (inclusion of sound), American comedy evolved from solely visual, to a mix of both visual and verbal comedy and switched its focus from expressing misfortune to highlighting an injustice that needs to be resolved.
