Most radios these days have FRS and GMRS capability. If you want to use GMRS (why would I want to use GMRS?) you *technically* need a license from the US Government.
Follow instructions below to get that license.
1. Get a FRN number
You can get a US government FCC Registration Number (FRN) by registering online through the FCC's Commission Registration System (CORES). Upon registration, the system will assign you a 10-digit FRN to uniquely identify you for all FCC transactions, such as applying for licenses or paying fees.
Make note of your user name and password, which you’ll need for the next step
2. Apply for GMRS license
Log into license manager: https://wireless2.fcc.gov/UlsEntry/licManager/login.jsp
When you select the license to purchase, it's the last one listed: ZA (GMRS)
3. Pay for the license
If you’re not there already, log in to CORES
