Protect Nesting Loons!

-Diane Daulton, Park Naturalist

Paddlers, photographers, fishermen: Loons are relying on you to STAY AWAY from them – especially  during sensitive times of year.

We are counting on you to… PLEASE avoid approaching or photographing loons or chicks in  June or July - especially near the shoreline. If you are caught  harassing wildlife, you may face consequences.

Be Aware…

Hangover position (the Loon's head stretched over the nest) is a warning sign that you are too close for comfort & you are threatening the loon. If you see  a loon exhibiting this behavior, BACK OFF right away!

NEVER approach a loon on its nest along shore!

Tremolo call – is a WARNING call that indicates a threat…often  caused by your presence. It is a wavering call like a horse whinny  (ascending and descending), sometimes likened to a “crazy  laugh”. Always leave more than 200 feet between you & loons. That’s about 2/3 of a football field or twice as long as from the  beach to the fishing pier!

Please respect wildlife and give them space.
