Nature Center Hosts
Nature center hosts provide a valuable service to park visitors by welcoming them to the park and nature center. Their primary responsibility is to staff and to maintain the nature cabin while it is open to the public.
The cabin hosts team is a fun, engaging group and the park's visitors are excited to hear what the Northwoods has to offer them.
The Park Naturalist develops the cabin’s educational themes, provides program materials and trains the naturalist cabin hosts. Ideally hosts have a desire to share their interest and knowledge with others.
Although not required, hosts are encouraged to share their talents by offering to do one or more of the following activities:
★ Conduct a guided hike of a park trail.
★ Present a talk or demonstration about an area of interest such as wildflowers, mushrooms, birds, art, nocturnal observations, etc.
★ Tell stories or lead a sing-a-long around a campfire.
Host training takes less than an hour and covers the basics of opening and closing the cabin, and logging visitor counts. The park naturalist communicates with volunteers primarily by email and through a shared calendar.
Team members schedule to work full or partial shifts as often as they like. The 2025 regular* nature cabin shifts are as follows:
Fridays 11am - 1pm
Saturdays 11am - 2pm
Sundays 11am - 2pm
Mondays 11am - 1pm
*The cabin host has discretion to extend cabin hours and to host on other days.
