Multicultural Experience collaborated with WEDO Global

15 Oct 2021 (Fri) - Discovery Tour to Sham Shui Po

23 Oct 2021 (Sat) - Discovery Tour to Tsim Sha Tsui

27 Oct 2021 (Wed) - Multicultural Human Library

The multicultural experience is part of the Globally Minded Teacher Learning Programme, which provides students with multicultural exposure to enhance cultural sensitivity in both teaching and daily lives.

There were three sessions, introducing two main East Asian communities in Hong Kong and an interacting human library to share how ethnic minority daily lives were. The activities attracted students majoring in Education to join.

Due to the pandemic, the discovery tour combined the videos with the cultural ambassadors’ explanation. By understanding the historical background of Tsim Sha Tsui, we can better understand why this community is surrounded by the facilities that ethnic minority needs. They can buy fresh halal meat, pray in the mosque, and have a wide variety of halal restaurants.

In the other session, the cultural ambassadors from WEDO Global introduced Sham Shui Po as one of the central living communities for East Asians. In contrast, the structural dilemma of finding a suitable living environment was revealed. On the one hand, most East Asians can only get a working-class job because of the language barrier; they cannot bear the high cost of housing but only the tenement building. On the other hand, some house owners refused to rent the East Asians, resulting in higher rent of the available mansions. The vicious cycle made them more challenging to have a better standard of living.

In the final session of a multicultural human library, we had two cultural ambassadors with us. One is Malaysian Chinese, and the other is Hong Kong Pakistani. They shared the food and clothing culture, schooling experience, family arrangement and attitudes, and many others related to their cultural backgrounds. The talks and dialogue revealed the experiences and challenges faced by ethnic minorities, where participants actively discussed instances of racial discrimination, and structural barriers in society.
