Recruitment and information for the health professions pathway program will begin during the winter of Freshman year. Each school will have information related to the program distributed to current freshmen in advance to scheduling meetings with guidance representatives to enroll in the program starting with the sophomore-level course. Please note that Rutgers University School of Health Professions requires students to obtain a grade of "C" or better in Mathematics (Algebra 1 or Geometry) and Biology in 9th Grade to enter the program.
This program consists of a total of four courses. Students will start their sophomore year (10th grade) with a full year of Dynamics of Healthcare in Society, junior year (11th grade) with a semester of Medical terminology and a semester of Emergency and Clinical Care, and finish senior year (12th grade) with a full year of Anatomy and Physiology I.
See the attached videos from some current health professionals and what they do during their work-day.
In order to earn college credit through Rutgers University, you must maintain a grade of 73 or better in the course to be eligible to take the Rutgers exam for the course you are enrolled in. The exam will be scheduled with the collaboration of FRHSD and Rutgers. You will have to score a 70 or better on the Rutgers exam to earn college credit in the course. The credits will be granted upon your graduation from high school.
The credits will be available upon graduation on your Rutgers transcript, and the acceptance of the credits will depend upon the institution and program in which you are enrolling after your high school graduation. Check with individual colleges and programs for credit acceptance.
First Aid certification, CPR certification and AED certification (American Red Cross) will be earned upon successful completion of testing requirements during Emergency and Clinical Care in their junior year.
When planning your courses, guidance can advise you in the electives that are available to meet graduation requirements. Being a part of the program will take the place of 1 elective each year of the program. However there is normally still space in your schedule to take additional electives both junior and senior year.
As part of the requirement of the program you must join a professional organization. HOSA satisfies this requirement for our students. Check the HOSA information area for a description of the association.
