Colts Neck High School seeks to encompass practical hands-on experience as well as private instruction to help expand the knowledge of sports medicine in secondary schools.
1. Grow an understanding of the everyday rules and responsibilities of an Athletic Trainer.
2. Develop professional skills/etiquette in the healthcare setting.
3. Formulate an understanding of documentation, patient privacy, and facility management.
4. Acquire and apply first aide skills. (When applicable)
5. Learn to work with others. It is important to gain the confidence and respect of others with whom you work.
Club Layout
Students who want credit for club participation are required to obtain a minimum of 40 points for the school year. (Points achieved by attending meetings and performing observation hours). 20 points must be acquired before winter break and the last 20 points acquired prior to Memorial Day.
2 points for meetings, 2 points per hour of observation.
Students who complete their minimum hours will receive a t-shirt at the end of the year.
Meetings will be held once a month in the athletic training room. Time is TBD depending on the sports season. During these meetings we will go over relevant topics and have an in-service on specific hands-on skills such as: Taping, wrapping, first aid, stretch/foam rolling techniques, and general sports medicine topics.
A parent/guardian as well as interested students must sign a contract stating that the student will abide by the rules of the club, or they will not receive credit for participation.
This club will only be offered to Sophomore, Junior, and Senior students at this time.

Description Terms
· Athletic Training: Athletic Trainers (ATs) are healthcare professionals who collaborate with physicians to provide preventative services, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions.
· Certified Athletic Trainer: To become a certified athletic trainer, a student must graduate with bachelors or master’s degree from an accredited professional athletic training education program and pass a comprehensive test administered by the Board of Certification (BOC). Once certified, he or she must meet ongoing continuing education requirements in order to remain certified.
· Athletic Training Student Aide: Secondary School students that observe the Certified Athletic Trainer in the Athletic Training facility. Student aides may assist with the educational practice activities such as stocking supplies, cleaning duties, making ice bags and performing inventories. Other suggested activities may include assisting with enforcing athlete sign-in procedures, setting up/breaking down sideline equipment, and acting as “extra eyes and ears” for the certified/regulated athletic trainer.
