Strategic Thinking

Analyze and Synthesize Information Across MULTIPLE SOURCES

  1. Do a Google Search
  2. Copy the link to the search
  3. Share link with students
  4. Create a BLANK Google Sheets spreadsheet.
  5. Share spreadsheet with students
  6. Each student adds a tab at the bottom. Double clicks to change to their name.
  7. Assign each student a page of results
  8. Student will analyze each result on the page.
  9. They will clearly communicate and organize the information.
  10. WITHOUT CLICKING... list the site titles and URL's
  11. Determine if you should click on the link, why or why not?
  12. If yes, click on it and hold down the Control key.
  13. Use Control F to find keywords on the page and skim the page.
  14. Is this resource credible? Why or why not?
  15. If it is credible, summarize in your own words pieces of information. Put each piece of information into a separate column.
  16. Now students have a crowdsourced resource of 30 pages of search results.
  17. Write a paper using the resources on the spreadsheet.

Expect this to not go "awesome" the first time you do it. It is unfamiliar to kids and requires thinking skills and analysis. Provide feedback and use this activity type repeatedly.

When you give students a template, you do the thinking for them. It is an ESSENTIAL 21st century skill that students can design digital documents from scratch.
