This will be my 19th year at Fremont Ross; previously, I spent 14 years at the old middle school.
Married to Barb, retired Ross teacher. We have two boys, Zach (24), and Aaron (20), a Junior at Capital University.

Course Description
Beginning swimming is designed for students who are non-swimmers and/or students who have limited swimming ability. Individual stroke development, water safety, water games, and activities will be the main focus. Intermediate swimming will continue stroke development and build student confidence in and around the water. Advanced swimming is designed for students who have intermediate or advanced swimming skills. Students will be involved in stroke refinement, water aerobics, water games, and water safety.
Academic Outcomes and Objectives
Students will:
Learn and perform the four racing and two resting strokes.
Perform basic water rescue techniques.
Lead them into a level of personal fitness that will benefit them physically, mentally, and socially.
Have fun and build confidence.
Grading Information
Your grade will be based on a point system that follows the basic grading concepts of Fremont City Schools. Grades are determined by a percentage of the total number of points possible for the nine weeks. Each nine weeks counts as 40% of the semester grade, and the semester exam counts as 20% of the semester grade.
A student who is absent from class due to in-school or out-of-school suspension is required to write/type a one-page report for each day out of class to receive credit for that day.
Work Ethic: Participation is a must. Students must always be prepared and on task. There is no competition grading; each student is competing against themselves to improve his/her strokes, confidence, and fitness level.
Students have the opportunity to make up work as follows: for each day a student is absent from class, a commensurate number of days will be applied to make-up assignments. Students must make arrangements with the teacher to make up missed time within one week of the student’s return to class. If the student is absent from class one week or more, a deadline for make-up work must be established by the teacher and communicated with the student and the principal.
Classroom Management
Philosophy: It is the teacher’s responsibility to maintain an atmosphere in the pool in which all students have the opportunity to learn. It is the responsibility of all students to behave in a way so that all of their classmates will have this opportunity.
Policies *All policies and rules in the student code of conduct and in the student handbook are in effect for Fremont Ross High School students during school hours and during school sanctioned events.
1. Students must have a signed pass by school officials when traveling in the hallway. THERE ARE NO PASSES PERMITTED.
2. Students will come to class on time and will be prepared to swim.
3. Electronic devices must be out of sight and sound unless they are being utilized as part of classroom learning. Specific instructions will be given when electronic devices are permitted.
4. The school is not responsible for lost/stolen/damaged items please lock your stuff up in a locker or give to instructor for safe keeping.
Absence and Tardy Policies
All students are required to follow the school’s attendance policy as outlined in the Fremont Ross High School Student Handbook.
This class is activity class and being in class is very important for class success.
A “Tardy” is defined as a student not being in the pool doors when the tardy bell rings. Three will result in a class detention to be held before or after school.
Swim Attire
Student must wear appropriate swim wear.
A towel and goggles are recommended.

Basic class structure and Assessment Given –
The students will learn and perform six strokes, learn basic water safety, improve overall fitness level, and most importantly have fun. The end of course assessment involves performing the six strokes, flip turns, diving, treading water, and retrieving an object from bottom of pool.
Course Description
Individuals will train against their own abilities while enhancing their own physical health through increase muscular strength, muscular endurance, speed, agility, flexibility, and overall endurance. Students will be able to evaluate their own training goals, organize an individual training program, record their progress, and participate in fitness related assessments.

Basic class structure and Assessment Given –
Students will learn a series of upper and lower body lifts/exercises that they will utilize during the semester. Emphasis is on correct form and safety. The assessment given at the end of the semester will determine the strength gain they have achieved during the course of the semester. The assessment includes the mile run, push-ups, sit-ups, etc.

Additional Information:
NO CELL PHONES ARE PERMITTED AT ANY TIME. STUDENTS WHO FAIL TO COMPLY WILL BE SENT TO THE OFFICE. PLACE THEM IN THE CELL PHONE CADDIE AT THE BEGINNING OF CLASS.
