ACCES-VR supports individuals with disabilities in transitioning to employment, higher education, and community living after leaving school. They offer a variety of services to assist eligible individuals in achieving their employment goals. Students are encouraged to apply for services up to two years before graduation. There is no fee to apply.
Some of the many services include:
Vocational Counseling
Assessment and career planning
Vocational Education (e.g. college or technical/business school)
Job readiness and job placement services
Driver evaluation training
Supportive Employment
Work related books, tools, licenses, and rehab technology
Referral to outside agencies for additional supports
Benefits advisement
The criteria includes the following:
That the student has a documented and permanent disability
That the disability creates a barrier to employment
That the student can benefit from rehabilitation services
That vocational rehabilitation services are required to achieve employment
*Having an IEP or 504 plan does not guarantee eligibility*
The Career Employment Institute (CEI) and the Employment Training Program (ETP) offer job training and pre-employment training for ungraded students. Depending on their age and skill level, students work either three periods a day or a full day. The program partners with businesses within Nassau County, and also incorporates independent living skills as part of the curriculum.
Trips - Ongoing trips throughout the school year include visits to the Electrical Training Center, Barry Tech BOCES, Nassau Community College, Hunter Business School, and other locations.
Presentations/Events - Presentations and events throughout the year include a Trade School Fair, Work Readiness presentations, and sessions hosted by various trade schools and organizations such as Hunter Business School, the Electrical Training Center, BOCES Adult Education, the Military, the Barber & Beauty Institute, Jovia Financial, Commercial Driving School, the Council for Airport Opportunity, Chase Bank, and others. These events are held for both Day and Twilight school students.
Ongoing ACCES-VR meetings - Ongoing ACCES-VR meetings are held to discuss support services that may be available after the student graduates or ages out, including options related to IEPs and 504 plans. If necessary, OPWDD paperwork will also be submitted.
The Explore Program is ACCES-VR funded and is designed for classified seniors. It focuses on career exploration, work-readiness skills, self-advocacy, and provides PAID work experience opportunities.
High School Orientation is designed for incoming special education students who will be joining the high school next year. The event is entirely conducted by our senior special education students.
Ongoing job placement opportunities are available with local businesses, including the Village of Freeport for custodial positions and other businesses throughout the area.
Travel training is available after school or through private sessions if needed.
PROSPER is a work-readiness program designed for both classified and general education students, including those in Day and Twilight programs. This unique partnership among colleges, businesses, and high schools offers a comprehensive approach to career development. The program includes career assessments, guidance, and counseling tailored to students' vocational interests. Participants earn 4 elective credits while working to develop realistic career goals through exposure to various colleges, trade schools, and businesses. Additionally, PROSPER aims to improve attendance and self-esteem by helping students understand the relevance of their education in relation to the world of work.
The Viscardi Center offers customized programs and services designed to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities across Long Island. These offerings help students build essential skills and prepare for success in life and work. Services include pre-employment transition support, job coaching and career development assistance, community integration and travel training, summer and afterschool programs, and support to improve school attendance among at-risk youth, among others.
The Viscardi Center also provides engaging program elements such as culinary, horticulture, and work-readiness skills training, an on-site Independent Living House, and a PAES Lab (Practical Assessment and Exploration System) to help students explore and develop job skills. The Viscardi Center is dedicated to helping students gain independence and thrive in school, work, and beyond.
Adult Career and Continuing Education Services – Vocational Rehabilitation (ACCES-VR):
ACCES-VR offers vocational rehabilitation services to individuals with disabilities, supporting their pursuit of employment, educational opportunities, and independent living. Services include vocational counseling, assessment, career planning, and job placement assistance. Students are encouraged to apply for services two years prior to graduation.

Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD):
OPWDD provides services and supports to individuals with developmental disabilities, promoting their integration into the community and enhancing their quality of life. Services encompass employment support, day habilitation, housing options, self-direction, respite, and assistive technology.
