The Free Mental Health Clinic Mission

Our mission is to provide transitional mental health care to the bridge the gap for uninsured or underinsured in the state of Iowa as they attempt to find a mental health home. We aim to provide compassionate, prompt psychiatric treatment for those in need. We are a group of medical, pharmacy, international medical graduate, and social work students led by physicians and other healthcare workers that are working to provide free psychiatric care and social service referrals for our family, friends, and neighbors in Iowa.

Clinic Structure

We host scheduled in-person psychiatric clinics and telepsych appointments every other Saturday with appointments from 9 AM until 11 AM. We do not accept walk in visits. At these visits, you will be seen by examiners and a psychiatric provider. We also have  pharmacy students and can work with you to address unmet needs such as obtaining insurance, housing instability, medication management, and more. We are located at the Abbe Center, 1039 Arthur Street, Iowa City.

We prefer in-person appointments, but also offer virtual telepsych appointments via Google Meets for those whom travel may be difficult or inaccessible. To establish a telepsych appointment, please indicate that in your email to us. Patients must be located in the state of Iowa for both in-person and telepsych visits.

Information for Patients

Free Mental Health Clinic is intended for uninsured and underinsured adult patients. We do not ask for proof of lack of insurance, but our goal is to bridge the gap for those without insurance and are experiencing difficulties finding a mental health home. We do not discriminate based on employment, sex, gender, age, race, or citizenship status. However, we do not see patients less than 18 years old. Appointments are available from 9 am to 11 am on Saturday mornings. We see patients both in person at the Abbe Center in Iowa City, and virtual patients, but we do not have walk-in visits.

To set up an appointment, email us at clinic@freementalhealthcliniciowacity.com.

Information for Student Volunteers

Our clinic is run by student volunteers, and we are always looking for the next generation of dedicated health care workers. We are in need of medical, pharmacy, and social work students, as well as undergraduates with an interest in health care. Typically, students work with a more experienced examiner their first few visits. Every semester, we run the Arch program to train pre-clinical medical students in conducting independent exams. We also accept international medical graduates (IMGs). If you are interested in volunteering, please email us at clinic@freementalhealthcliniciowacity.com.

Information for Practitioners

We are in need of resident and attending physicians, as well as physician assistants and nurse practitioners. Free Mental Health Clinic is an excellent opportunity to give back to the community, as well as to directly teach the next generation of health care workers. If you are interested, please email us at clinic@freementalhealthcliniciowacity.com.

Information for Volunteer Interpreters

We see patients that speak a variety of languages, including Spanish, French, and Arabic. If you are a medically fluent speaker of a language other than English and are interested in volunteering as an interpreter, please email us at clinic@freementalhealthcliniciowacity.com.

Donations

As a non-profit organization, all of our funding comes from donations. These donations allow us to continue to provide much needed free mental services to Iowans, and your generosity is greatly appreciated by our clinic and the patients we serve.
