Recorders

In January, the 4th graders will begin studying the recorder in music class. Since we only have 45 minutes once a week to rehearse, the children have been allowed to bring home their recorder and folder to practice. Each child has a folder with music and a recorder with a cleaning rod and case.

Any information regarding cleaning and playing is in their recorder folder. I have asked the children to practice throughout the week. Like any other subject, repetition is essential to being successful and progressing. If you hear squeaks, check for the following:

1. Blowing LIGHTLY into the recorder, like soup on a spoon...You do not want the soup to fall off into the bowl!

2. Covered holes...If the holes are not covered completely the recorder will make a squeaking sound!

3. The angle of the recorder. The end (foot joint) should be pointing down. To make sure of this, have the right thumb down by the foot joint as an anchor.
