Learning This Week
This week in early years the children learnt their first 'Earth Words,' these are words that they can't use their current phonic knowledge for. The children enjoyed trying to write these on paper, with chalk and in sand.
This week in Year 1 the children have been learning about Autumn in Science. They have enjoyed discussing the animals we might see in Autumn and how the leaves change colour as they fall from the trees. They have all made a leaf rubbing to represent Autumn and will create a Seasons page in their Science books.
This week, the children have been absolutely thrilled to learn about the Crimean War in their writing lessons! The week kicked off by exploring fascinating facts and then transforming them into amazing sentences. Year 2 have been especially excited to dive into history, as it perfectly ties in with their writing focus on the incredible Florence Nightingale. It’s been a fantastic journey of learning, and the children are really engaged and eager to learn more!
Scholastic Book Fair
We are so excited for the return of our book fair! All children will have the opportunity to visit the fair during the school day to look at the books, and it will be open after school from Wednesday 16th to Monday 21st October so that families may come along to view / purchase books.
If you are not able to visit the fair with your child but would like them to be able to chose a book to buy, you can send in cash in a named envelope. Please pass this to the class teacher any time between the 16-21 October.
As well as books, there are always small stationery items such as pencils, bookmarks etc, with prices from £1.
As a school, we are given back a percentage of the money raised during the fair to spend on new books for our classrooms and libraries, so please do come along to support it if you are able to!
Parking
Can we please remind parents about parking responsibly around pick up and drop off times. We have had more complaints this week, from residents of Berry Close regarding parents parking on double yellow lines, and parents who have sworn at residents when they have been confronted. We have passed on the details of how to report parking problems so that we may get parking wardens to visit at peak times. Please consider our neighbours, as well as the safety of the families walking at these times.
Second Hand Uniform
We have masses of pre-loved school uniform available for parents to take as needed. Although donations are appreciated they are not necessary, and we have so much at the moment that we would love to invite parents to come and have a look through to take anything they may need. Please pop along to the office where we would be happy to let you browse through what we have!
Flu Immunisations
The school nurses are coming in on Wednesday 16th October to administer the flu vaccinations to the children. In order for your child to receive their dose, you will need to complete the form online via the attached poster. You can scan the QR code or go to the website here. Consent needs to be given no later than 2 working days beforehand.
Please complete the form to confirm even if you do not want your child to have their vaccine.
Harvest Festival
Our annual Harvest Festival will be on Wednesday 16th October. Reverend Phil Aindow from St John's Church in Hedge End will be coming in to talk to the children about Harvest, and as per previous years, children are welcome to bring in an item to be donated to The Hedge End Food Centre.

Walktober
We are taking part in Walktober 2024!
As we head into autumn, it’s important that we all keep active and where possible, get outdoors. To encourage this, the My Journey Team at Hampshire County Council has invited schools to celebrate International Walk to School Month by taking part in Walktober.
This event is designed to inspire pupils, families and staff to travel actively and sustainably throughout October.
We hope as many of our pupils, families and staff as possible can get involved by walking, wheeling, cycling, scooting, using Park and Stride and public transport more often.
There is a Walktober competition for your child to enter. Each pupil will receive a Walktober Activity Card. Over the month of October, pupils complete six activities (they can do more if they wish)! Pupils can choose from the suggestions list or be creative and think of their own activity too! The Walktober Activity Card forms the pupil competition entry.
Please see the website here for more information on the event and competition.

Laser Show
The laser show is just round the corner! If you are available to volunteer at this event there are a couple of easy roles that we need filling. You will still have the opportunity to watch the show with your families as everything will shut down just before the show starts. You will need to be available at 6.30 on Tuesday 15th October for a site walk round and small training session and then from about 3.30 on Saturday 19th October.
Nut Free School
We would like to remind parents that we are a nut free school. We have members of both the staff and student community who are anaphylactic to nuts of all varieties. This includes obvious things like hazelnut spread in sandwiches, but also many types of cereal bars and biscuits also contain nuts. Please check the ingredients list of all food items that you send into school.

Attendance Guide for Parents / Carers
What YOU must do:
Try to telephone the school before 8.30am each day of your child’s absence.
Tell the school in advance, of any medical appointments and bring in appointment cards/letters.
If you are not sure whether your child is well enough to attend school, send them in anyway as they often perk up on arrival.
If you and your child are experiencing difficulties with school attendance then talk to us as a first step so we can help!
What WE will do:
Check your child’s attendance every day.
Phone home to discuss your child’s attendance with you.
Invite you into school for attendance meetings if we are concerned.
If we cannot establish a reason for absence, then we may make a welfare home visit.

School Spotlight
We promote this British Value by demonstrating how democracy works by discussion, decision-making and voting. For example:
Encouraging children to know their views count and their opinions are important - for example, following the children’s interests for topics and activities.
Encouraging children to make decisions together, e.g. when sharing a group toy, like a large train set.
Encouraging children to see their role in the ‘bigger picture’, e.g. linking to part of a family, class, group, school, community etc.
Providing opportunities for the children to vote between choices of activity, for example, choosing a theme for their role play area, choosing a book for story time or a song for song time by a show of hands.
Children may also have the opportunity to vote for members of a school council.
