Learning This Week
This week in EYFS the children have been learning about themselves. They have talked about how they are all different, created their own self-portraits using mirrors as well as talked about their families. The children have created their families in a variety of ways including paint and natural objects. They have loved sharing and talking about their family pictures!
This week in Year 1 the children have been creating a self-portrait on the iPad. The children thought about their previous Art learning and then discussed the difference between using media such as paint and pencils in comparison to technology.
This week, the children embarked on an exciting new adventure, learning to play the recorder. They were absolutely thrilled to get started and have been practising the note 'B' with great enthusiasm! They have also been thoroughly enjoying their guided reading sessions, where they’ve had the chance to immerse themselves in the role-play corner, pretending to be nurses like the inspiring Florence Nightingale. It’s been a fun and engaging week of learning and discovery!
Summer Reading Challenge
Thank you to everyone that took part in the Hedge Library Summer Reading Challenge 2024. Everyone read so many books that we were placed as a runner up in 3rd place out of 8 local schools. Well done everyone and we hope you enjoyed sharing your stories at home with your families.
Free Courses for Parents
Freegrounds Infant School is in a prepaid area for the emotional health resources hub: inourplace
This means our staff and parents / carers can access a range of online support to better understand our chldren's emotional health, brain development and wellbeing, for free.
There are courses from pregnancy up to adulthood, and a variety of languages are also suppported too,
Parent Reminder
Can we please politely ask that when you are on site dropping off / picking up your child, that you do not linger at the windows to the classrooms. This can distress children who are coming in to school, and distract children who should be listening to their classroom adults at the end of the day.
We appreciate that particularly for Year R, it can be hard to leave them in the mornings, but often times it is best for you to hand your child over to us and leave as swiftly as possible. If there are any problems with your child we would contact you if necessary.
Flu Immunisations
The school nurses are coming in on Wednesday 16th October to administer the flu vaccinations to the children. In order for your child to receive their dose, you will need to complete the form online via the attached poster. You can scan the QR code or go to the website here. Consent needs to be given no later than 2 working days beforehand.
Please complete the form to confirm even if you do not want your child to have their vaccine.
Walktober
As in previous years, we will be supporting Hampshire County Council's Walktober challenge.
By travelling actively and sustainably throughout October school communities can make a change for our wellbeing, our community and our planet. Walking, wheeling, cycling, scooting, using Park and Stride or public transport reduces car use, benefits health and wellbeing, has a positive impact on the local community by reducing congestion and improves air quality.
More information will follow in the coming weeks.

If you hold a current DBS through the school and you are able to help at the Year R disco, please do let the school office know. These events can only run with enough volunteers.
Laser Show
We need several volunteers for this event. If you are able to help please do get in contact with the school office. You will need to be available Tuesday 15th October at 6.30 for a small briefing session at the school. The volunteer roles will still allow you to watch the show with your family.
Bags2School
Thank you for your kind donations which weighed in at 537kg which converted in to £161.10 donations to FISHES. The price per kilo has dropped since our last collection so considering this we have done very well!! We are planning another collection for January so please bear us in mind when you are having a clear out over the winter!!
Nut Free School
We would like to remind parents that we are a nut free school. We have members of both the staff and student community who are anaphylactic to nuts of all varieties. This includes obvious things like hazelnut spread in sandwiches, but also many types of cereal bars and biscuits also contain nuts. Please check the ingredients list of all food items that you send into school.

School Spotlight
Schools are required to provide for the spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development of their pupils. Part of this requirement means that they actively promote the fundamental British Values. The fundamental British Values are defined as:
Democracy
The Rule of Law
Individual Liberty
Mutual Respect and Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs
Promoting these British Values is now a central part of teaching and learning. By doing this, schools aim to help children become well-rounded members of the society. These British Values are promoted throughout the curriculum, across the whole school. They are also seen in school ethos and policies, assemblies, special events and cultural celebrations. Over the next few weeks we will tell you more about them.
