Trimester 1
Throughout Trimester 1, students will read the novel Wonder by R.J. Palacio. We will discuss key literary concepts such as narration and perspective, figurative language, theme, and comparing characters and events in the story. Students will learn how to identify evidence and quote accurately while making inferences. We read to write, and write to learn!
Trimester 2
Throughout Trimester 2, students will read the novel Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. Although we will continue to discuss and assess literary standards, our primary focus will shift to nonfiction standards. Students will learn how to determine the central idea of a text, analyze point of view, and compare and contrast text structures.
Trimester 3
Throughout Trimester 3, students will have a balance of experience with both literary and nonfiction passages/texts. All major standards will be reviewed and assessed before the end of the school year.
Foundational SkillsThese are the building blocks of knowledge that are essential in supporting each student's ability to read and write independently. Decoding and encoding of words occurs daily in our classroom. Parents and guardians can help by encouraging your child to complete activities under the "Phonics" section in our Google Classroom.
FluencyStudents will have the opportunity to practice their reading fluency daily within our class. Although our novels are primarily read aloud by the teacher, students will have AIR (Accountable Independent Reading) and partner reading time. Students will also have the opportunity to read 1:1 with the teacher biweekly to track our words read per minute and accuracy.
HomeworkHomework will be assigned at the beginning of each week, and will directly relate to content being learned within class. Parents and guardians are encouraged to support their child with homework. A recorded read aloud of the text/passage will also be provided in Google Classroom under the "Homework" section. Homework should be returned to class by the final day of the week.
