Curriculum Scope
Literary Reading
Literary reading along with reading comprehension skills, are introduced and assessed through the use of the novels and supporting texts and short stories.
Narrative Writing
The students will show their understanding of the narrative writing by planning, writing, and publishing narrative. Grammar, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling are also developed.
Foundational Skills
The building blocks of reading: phonics, phonological awareness, fluency & vocabulary are taught systemically and explicitly in order to develop long-term skills.
Nonfiction Reading
Non-fiction reading along with reading comprehension skills, are introduced and assessed through the use of the novels and supporting texts and articles.
Argumentative Writing
After reading non-fiction text, students will explore the process of forming reasons, drawing conclusions and developing opinions based on non-fiction texts and producing an argumentative writing piece that supports their thinking.

The building blocks of reading: phonics, phonological awareness, fluency & vocabulary are taught systemically and explicitly in order to develop long-term skills.
Fiction / Nonfiction Reading
We will revisit the fiction and nonfiction reading standards through novels, short stories, and more.
Informational Writing
The students will research a relevant topic to write an informational piece that educates others.

Whole-class novels are used to model fluency, spark discussions, explore and support key skills and concepts, as well as expose students to new vocabulary.
Students are encouraged to select a high-interest independent novel that they will be able to read and explore at their own pace.
