Trick Words

Trick words can not be tapped out or sounded out. They are not phonetic words.

Trick words must be memorized.

Students should be able to read and spell these 93 trick words by the end of grade 1.

There are many ways to practice them including:

clap out the letters by height (tall - above head, medium-at waist, low letters-arms hanging low) while saying the letter names and then snap to say the word;

put salt in a cookie sheet and write the words, stating each letter name as it's written, then underline the letters and say the word;

skywrite the words while stating letter names and word;

put paint or hairgel in a ziplock and write the words;

use flashcards;

go on word hunts in magazines or books;

play mystery games "I'm thinking of a trick word with 3 letters that starts with t."
