Give your child opportunities to count money! This is an important skill taught in second grade. Whenever possible, involve your child in counting and determining the value of different coins. Have your child help count the costs in a grocery store,
Tell time! Ask your child to tell time to the hour, half hour, or even 5 minutes! Expand on this by asking them how much time has passed or how much more time until another time. For example, you could ask"It is 8:30 now and we have to leave at 9:00. How long until we have to leave?"
Measurement is a main focus in the spring of second grade. Your child will learn to measure using various units (inches, centimeters, feet, yards, and meters). Practice this at home by having them measure objects, compare measurements, and have discussions about measuring. We also discuss estimation to help your second grader estimate the length of different objects.
